8-Track ReBirth Groovebox & Matrix Pattern Sequencer for M-VAVE FM-1

1. Introduction

MORPHEUS transforms the ultra-portable M-VAVE FM-1 hardware groovebox into a standalone 8-track ReBirth-style groovebox and matrix pattern sequencer workstation.

It combines a 240×240 pixel high-contrast LCD matrix grid with a high-performance audio DSP engine. It integrates circuit-modeled TR-808 and TR-909 drum machines with a dedicated 12-lane Drum Matrix (ACC, CH, OH, CY, CB, CP, RS, HT, MT, LT, SD, BD), dual TB-303 acid synths with non-linear diode ladder resonance, Devilfish envelope expansion, and RAT-style distortion, an Amen breakbeat loop slicer, a 2-operator FM lead synth, a sub-bass synth, and independent MIDI channel output for every track (CH 1–16).

2. Hardware Layout & Controls

The M-VAVE FM-1 front panel features 7 rotary encoders, 14 pushbuttons, and a 27-key silicone keyboard:

STEP 1

Project Canvas & Tempo Setup

Set the foundational pace of your track. MORPHEUS supports precise tempo control from 50 to 240 BPM (displayed to 0.1 BPM accuracy).

Action / ControlScreen DisplayFunctional Outcome
TEMPO (Turn encoder) TEMPO: 135.0 BPM Locks sequencer clock to a driving acid techno tempo (135.0 BPM).
HOME (or TRACK) TRACK: T1 (303 BASS) Focuses the matrix grid and controls on Track 1.
GLO LENGTH: 16 STEPS Ensures Track 1 is configured to standard 16-step 4/4 bar length.
🎧 What You Hear: Sequencer clock and transport arm at 135.0 BPM.

STEP 2

Engaging the 303 Transistor Bass Engine

MORPHEUS features multiple internal sound generators. For Track 1, we engage the non-linear 303 transistor bass model featuring diode ladder filtering and continuous portamento glides.

Action / ControlScreen DisplayFunctional Outcome
LFO (Tap Sound button) SOUND: 303 ACID BASS Cycles track engine from SUB/FM/MUTE to the 303 resonant engine.
KNOB 1 (Cutoff) CUTOFF: 45% Sets baseline diode ladder filter frequency for a warm, punchy bite.
KNOB 2 (Resonance) RESONANCE: 78% Dials in self-oscillating peak squelch on note transients.
🎧 What You Hear: Classic saturated transistor sawtooth wave with aggressive diode resonance ringing when notes are struck.

STEP 3

Programming Bassline with Step Recording & Silicone Keys

Step recording lets you punch in notes with pitch auditioning and automatic step advancement, just like classic hardware sequencers.

Action / ControlScreen DisplayFunctional Outcome
REC REC ● [STEP 1/16] Activates Step Record mode. Active step cursor glows on grid.
C2, C2, D#2, G2 GRID NOTES FILLED Assigns notes to steps 1–4 with standard gate velocity (115) and advances cursor.
SELECT (Turn clockwise) STEP 5 → REST Advances the cursor without entering a note, leaving an expressive 16th rest.
REC (Press again) NORMAL PLAY MODE Exits Step Record mode and locks in pattern.
🎧 What You Hear: Immediate pitch playback upon key press; punchy rhythmic acid bassline ready for transport playback.

STEP 4

Sculpting Acid Magic: Portamento Slides & Accents

The soul of 303 acid music comes from two physical behaviors: note ties (triggering smooth 60ms analog pitch glides without envelope re-triggers) and velocity accents (exponentially opening cutoff and sharpening decay).

Action / ControlScreen DisplayFunctional Outcome
SELECT (Scrub to Step 3) STEP: 3 (D#2) Targets the desired step for modification.
KNOB 2 (Turn clockwise) TIE: ON [→] Enables portamento slide into step 4 without re-striking the amplitude envelope.
HOLD EDIT + KNOB 1 VELOCITY: 127 [ACCENT] Boosts note velocity above 105, engaging accent overdrive and filter snap.
🎧 What You Hear: The bassline seamlessly glides between pitches, punctuated by razor-sharp screaming resonant accent bursts.

STEP 5

Real-Time Performance & Filter Sweeping

Start the transport and manipulate the 4 dedicated hardware encoders in real time while the sequence plays.

Action / ControlScreen DisplayFunctional Outcome
PLAY PLAYING ▶ 135.0 BPM Starts the master sequencer transport.
KNOB 1 (Turn 0% → 100%) CUTOFF SWEEP Sweeps the diode ladder cutoff frequency across the audible spectrum.
KNOB 2 (Resonance) RES: 85% Pushes the filter feedback into piercing analog self-oscillation.
KNOB 3 (Decay) DECAY: 350 ms Adjusts the snappy tail length of the envelope filter modulation.
🎧 What You Hear: Deep low-end sub frequencies opening into screaming harmonics and squelchy self-oscillating peaks.

STEP 6

Automating Filter Sweeps with the Modulation Curve Track

MORPHEUS provides a dedicated per-step automation curve track alongside every pattern. You can draw automated filter sweeps (MIDI CC 74) that cycle continuously with hands-free precision.

Action / ControlScreen DisplayFunctional Outcome
ENV CURVE VIEW (CC 74) Toggles display from note piano roll to the per-step modulation curve editor.
SELECT + KNOB 3 STEP CC: 20 → 118 Sets modulation curve values step-by-step to craft a rising and falling filter sweep.
ENV (Press again) NOTE GRID VIEW Returns to the note pattern matrix while curve automation continues running.
🎧 What You Hear: The resonant filter smoothly breathes, opens, and closes automatically with every repetition of the 16-step bar.

STEP 7

Multi-Track Polymetric Layering (909 Drums + 7-Step Lead)

Build out a full track across MORPHEUS's 4 independent sequencer tracks, leveraging independent polyrhythmic step lengths.

Action / ControlScreen DisplayFunctional Outcome
TRACK (Scrub to Track 4) TRACK: T4 (909 DRUMS) Switches focus to Track 4 (MIDI Ch 10 / internal percussion kit).
C1 on Steps 1, 5, 9, 13 FOUR-ON-THE-FLOOR Programs a pounding 909-style kick drum on the quarter notes.
TRACK (Switch to Track 2) TRACK: T2 (SUB LEAD) Selects Track 2 for an analog melodic lead line.
KNOB 4 (Pattern Length) LENGTH: 7 STEPS Shortens Track 2 to 7 steps, creating an evolving polymetric motif against the 16-step bassline.
🎧 What You Hear: Complete driving dancefloor groove with locked bass, solid drums, and an ever-evolving polyrhythmic melody.
